In response to the recent external assurance review of Slough Borough Council, Rob Whiteman, CIPFA CEO said:
"CIPFA carried out the assurance review at Slough, which we hope is useful.
"We have not been involved in the department's proposal to send in commissioners, but we regard intervention as the right thing to do. Councils don't always have the capacity to work through their problems, so commissioners play an important role in bringing about change. We think that applies to Slough.
"It should also be noted that past interventions at other authorities have led to positive improvements in financial management and governance."
