At an event to mark 40 years since the publication of the Layfield Report, panelist discussed the importance of the landmark enquiry into local government finances and asked how its suggestions have held up 40 years after its launch.
Hosted by CIPFA’s Director for Local Government, Sean Nolan, the audience heard talks from Sir Michael Lyons, Chief Executive of Bury Council Mike Owen, Professor Tony Travers and Professor George Jones OBE, an original member of the Layfield committee and contributor to the Layfield report.
Over the course of the four talks and Q&A session, the panelists debated the factors that promoted the report, its reception, and explored the inaction following the publishing of the report.
