Martyn Buckley, lifelong CIPFA member, died aged 69 in Selkirk recently.
Martyn spent most of his career in local government finance, working for Selby District Council, Western Isles Council, Perth and Kinross Council, Ettrick and Lauderdale District Council and Scottish Borders Council. After taking early retirement from Scottish Borders, he also worked as a contractor with CIPFA Scotland, taking on various assignments with Scottish public sector bodies and delivering training for CIPFA.
Martyn was a technically gifted member of CIPFA with an outstanding knowledge of rules and regulations, particularly around the final accounts process. In addition, for many years, he was CIPFA’s senior P3 examiner in Scotland – a gargantuan task bringing together examiners, CIPFA students and having a regular battle with CIPFA’s notorious examinations administration.
Martyn’s work was recognised when he received the Ian Doig Award for Contribution to CIPFA in Scotland and, in 2007, the Tom Sowerby Award – a UK-wide honour for outstanding service to CIPFA students. Martyn was a proud CIPFA member and would promote the Institute at every opportunity.
Martyn was a proud Yorkshireman and avid follower of Yorkshire cricket and Leeds United. He was also something of a bon viveur with a taste for fine wine and was an accomplished cook. He was a lover of classical music and a keen quizzer, exemplified by his reaching the final of ITV’s The Krypton Factor.
Martyn was a thorough professional who was a credit to CIPFA. Out of work, his vast range of interests and affable personality made him great company and a good friend to many. He leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Maureen, and two sons.
Rest in peace.
