In response to the announcement that Liz Truss has resigned as Prime Minister, Rob Whiteman, CIPFA CEO, said:
“After such political turmoil the UK is crying out for some stability. Liz Truss was Prime Minister for less than two months, but that short time has proved disastrous for the UK economy. It is my sincere hope that going forward the government makes better and more effective decisions that are in everyone’s best interest.
“The lack of a realistic economic plan makes it extremely challenging for public services, who are currently being forced to make decisions in a political vacuum. With no clear policy or direction from the government, the public sector can only firefight and respond to short term challenges as they prepare for the worst.
“To balance the books, the government will be forced to find massive savings and public services will be in their sights. However, as our recent Performance Tracker report shows, far from there being any fat left to trim, public services are already at breaking point. Further cuts will inevitably hit the most vulnerable hardest.
“Once again, we are stuck in political limbo. It is clear that whoever takes the position of prime minister will have a huge task on their hands.”
