One of the most complex areas of Housing Benefits administration is in the dealing with claims from those living in specialist types of accommodation, especially Supported (Exempt) Accommodation and temporary accommodation schemes for homeless persons. The different subsidy arrangements relating to these kinds of claim can also result in high costs for Local Authorities.
Effectively dealing with such claims is increasingly important following the government’s announcement that the responsibility for providing support for the housing costs of those living in supported exempt accommodation and some other types of supported accommodation schemes will remain with local authorities.
This series of CIPFA Benefits and Revenue Services benefits master-class events provided detailed and fully updated information on these types of claim including examining how the administration and payment of such claims will be affected by the government’s welfare reform programme.
