Challenges against the Council Tax Valuation Lists for England (1993) and Wales (2005) have been released by the Valuation Agency. The main findings are as follows.
- The Valuation Office Agency (VOA) received 52,000 challenges against council tax valuations in England and Wales between 1 April 2015 and 31 March 2016. This represents a decrease of 3% compared with the previous financial year when the VOA received 53,000 challenges.
- The VOA resolved 52,000 challenges between 1 April 2015 and 31 March 2016. This represents a decrease of 4% compared with the previous financial year when 54,000 were resolved.
- Of the resolved challenges 63% resulted in no change to the council tax band, the same as in the previous financial year.
- As at 31 March 2016, 10,000 challenges were unresolved against the council tax valuation lists, the same number as at the end of the previous financial year.
Changes to the Council Tax Valuation Lists for England (1993) and Wales (2005):
- There were 275,000 insertions into and 57,000 deletions from the Council Tax Valuation Lists in England and Wales in 2015/16. In the previous financial year there were 235,000 insertions and 59,000 deletions.
- There were 69,000 amendments made to the Council Tax Valuation Lists in England and Wales (73,000 in the previous financial year). Of these, 36% resulted in an increase to the council tax band, 31% resulted in a reduction to the band and 33% resulted in no change to the band.
