The Welsh Government has published the outcome of their recent consultation on exempting care leavers from council tax. The consultation ended on 19 December 2018 and received responses from care leavers, local authorities, third-sector organisations and individual taxpayers. Over 90% of respondents expressed their support for our proposals. It would seem that, following on from the responses received, the Welsh Government is to bring forward legislation which will ensure that care leavers are exempt from council tax from 1 April 2019. This may require some additional ‘exemption’ information made available within the 2019/20 council tax information leaflets or on Welsh Authority websites.
