House of Commons publishes Local Government Finance Settlement briefing for 2021-22

Published on 5 February 2021, the attached briefing paper provides background to a debate in the House of Commons on the final Local Government Finance Settlement 2021-22, scheduled for 10 February 2021. The House of Commons must approve the settlement before it can take effect.

Section 2.4 of the briefing note [Referendum thresholds] provides updated details of the criteria for referendum thresholds for the 2021-22 financial year. Local authorities with responsibility for social care (county and unitary authorities) must hold a referendum if Council Tax is to be increased by 5% or more.

Local government is devolved to Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The Local Government Finance Settlement, and the attached briefing paper, apply to England only.
