On the 23 June 2021 the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government published data regarding collection rates for Council Tax and Non-Domestic Rates. In 2020-21 English local authorities collected a total of £32.2 billion in council tax, irrespective of the year to which it related.

As at 31 March 2021, the total amount of council tax still outstanding amounted to £4.4 billion. This is a cumulative figure and includes arrears that may stretch back a number of years and is an increase of £841 million over the figure for 2019-20. It is higher than in previous years due to the Covid-19 pandemic temporarily reducing or delaying recovery action during 2020-21.
